gallery 3 golden tips to save up money for your next trip

Hey lovelies,

Today I will discuss a subject I get asked so much about. Yes, let’s talk M-O-N-E-Y!
I often get asked how I can afford all my travels and today I will share my little secrets with you.
In all honesty, I do get a lot of sponsored trips, presstrips, free stays and free flights and I am aware that if you are not a travelblogger, a freelancer, a digital nomad that you don’t get these goodies. But besides that- I also use a lot of my own money to explore and discover our globe.Travel pic 1

And today I will share my 3 golden tips on how I am always able to afford my trips.

  1. A STRICT GOAL + PLANNING
Having a goal and creating a planning is essential for almost everything that you will do in this life. If you have a goal you have something you can work towards to without feeling like a lost sheep. When you have a goal (hence- the destination, duration etc) you can start planning. How long will it take you to being able to afford your travel and trip. It might take you up to a year to save up, or even longer, but do not get discouraged. If you really want it, you can make it happen. I believe in you.
Look at your income and see how much you have to put aside to get the amount that you need for your trip. Than look at the amount you need. Divide that amount by the money you can put aside every month- and tada- the outcome is your answer. For example; if your trip costs 1500 USD and you can put aside 150 euro a month – it will only take you 10 months to save up and get to that amount.

2.    OUT WITH THE OLD + NOT IN WITH THE NEW
In order to make some extra cash money go through your apartment and look at (valuable) items that you can sell. Have you heard of the 1 year rule for your clothing? If you have not worn it in the past year SELL IT! Get rid of it. You can sell it online or at a local vintage / second hand market. Every dollar you get by selling your old things you can put in your ‘Travel Jar’- (more about this tomorrow :))
While saving, try to limit your amount of time that you spend shopping (online)- Do you really need that new top? Probably YAAAS- haha…but just try not to buy it and keep focussed on your goal!

3. LIMIT YOUR MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTIONS
People often feel surprised when I tell them that I don’t own a telly. But with the amount of traveling, I hardly have time to watch the telly. And everything that I do want to watch I can find on Netflix. Of course, Netflix costs money too, but you can share a subscription with your friend. The only subscriptions that I have are internet- (As a blogger you just can’t live without it) and well, my rent- of course this is not a subsription, haha. But it is something I have to pay every month.
Cancel your gym membership, your phone subscription – everything you don’t really need. And I promise you, that you will save up a lot of money- money you can put in your Travel Jar!

These tips always help me to save for my trips. Sometimes it is hard not to spend money on a cute new top, or an extra dinner in a fancy restaurant- but hey- if that means you can finally take that cool surf trip amongst the coast of Portugal, or that backpacking trip to Australia- isn’t it worth it in the end than?

I hope these tips helped you out a bit, let me know what your best tips are!

xoxo

  1. “out with the old…” definitely! Your advice made me smile as before our longest world trip we held a series of car boot sales, where everything really did have to go. We sold the radio that was keeping us entertained on the pitch and someone, jokingly, put an offer in for the car itself. He was a bit taken aback when we said “sure”.
