Hey lovely friends,
Today is the first day of the new ‘DOBE GLOBE Schedule’ (see previous post: *click).
And to kick this one of I wanted to share an awesome #TOTD with you guys! Don’t get me wrong, I pick all my #TOTD’s carefully and I love everyone that I choose but this #TOTD’s account just fits my relaunch perfectly. All his pictures in his gallery are amazing. Picture after picture. He has almost 1300 pictures and I honestly could not find one that I did not like. I love to meet creative people and this is definitely a creative guy. Next to his awesome photography he runs a website where he does even more awesome stuff.
Short message from the #TOTD: My name is Tommy, I am a 27 year old dreamer and lover of life. I am the founder and owner of Tommy Blades Creative; an apparel and photography company based out of Oregon, USA that reaches far beyond just a hat,
t-shirt, or photograph – and into a way of life. My brand helps empower people to pursue their dreams and passions, whatever they may be, to the absolute fullest. It helps people embrace their unique traits and run with them. And it is creating a powerful and positive community through social media.
1. Where did you go for your first travel experience/holiday?
I am fortunate enough to have played at a high level of soccer since a young age in the United States. When I was 12 years old I had the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands to play in a large tournament and while I was there also had the opportunity to see a lot of the sights.
Although I was young I still distinctly remember the beauty of the canals, tulip fields, windmills, and historic buildings. It was an incredible life experience at such a young age.
It opened my eyes to how beautiful the world is and how much of it I had not seen.
2. Which 5 items do you always bring on your travels?
First, I hopefully have my fiance and my dog with me – they make adventuring that much more enjoyable. Next, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are always a staple in my travel diet. Cheap, nutritious, packable, and easy to eat on the go. I always have a couple of those when I am heading out somewhere. I also always have my camera in my hand.
Wherever I am going I love to capture the unique beauty of that place and
that moment. I also love to wear a special “watch” of mine as well, which
doesn’t tell time. It is essentially a constant reminder of how I am choosing to spend my time, what I am doing with my day, and what is really important. When I am out exploring, adventuring, photographing, etc, time does not matter to me. I do not want to have a schedule or a to do list – I just want to be in that moment – and that “watch” helps remind me of that. Lastly, I love to listen to music while driving wherever it is I’m
going. I have hundreds of songs that remind me of what I love and they get me that much more excited about the day.
3. Where are you now and where will you go for your next trip
I am currently based out of Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest part of the USA. This is where I was born and raised and it is truly “home” to me. I am about an hour to the ocean and an hour to the mountains, it is a remarkable part of the world. I have had the opportunity to live in numerous places in the USA and around the world, and nothing compares to Oregon for me.
I am looking forward to traveling to a few different locations within the USA as my fiance interviews with different medical residencies soon. We will most likely find ourselves visiting Montana, Washington, California, and Idaho. We love traveling and seeing new places. We are dreaming about a trip to Newfoundland and Iceland at some point into the future as well. The raw beauty in places like that blow us away.
4. What is your dream destination and why?
I mentioned Newfoundland and Iceland in the last question… and that would be it. It is not your typical dream destination – and that is part of the reason that it is mine. I am so attracted to the simple and natural beauty in the part of the world. The water, homes, harbor towns, mountains, fields, and so on. It’s a photography dream for me. I would also love to learn about their different cultures and ways of life. I am constantly inspired by human connections and seeing how different people view/live their lives.
5. What is your favorite travel picture that you took and why/what is the
story behind it ?
One trip that was gorgeous and powerful for me was a solo trip to Arches National Park in Moab, Utah. After I had made the final decision to leave Utah and move back to Oregon I wanted to get away from everything for a few days to create my plan for moving forward.
I went after winter but before any other tourists started to visit. The first morning I woke up at about 5AM and went straight to the National Park – there wasn’t a person in sight. I literally had one of the most well-known and popular national parks… to myself. It was unbelievable, one of the most memorable feelings I have ever had and probably will ever have. I parked my car at the start of Delicate Arch trailhead and ran to the top and watched the sunrise. I captured the moment with photos and they are some of my favorite I have ever taken. Truly inspirational. When I wasn’t hiking I was at tiny restaurants writing out my plans for the future and how I was going to take the next steps. I left that trip feeling like what I was doing next in life was the perfect thing for me to be doing.
6. If you could take 3 celeb travel buddies on your next trip, who would they be and why?
To be honest, I am not sure. I do not watch much TV or think I would be truly inspired to travel with a particular celebrity. I would much rather travel with anyone from my family or my close friends. I have three very close friends from college and I think it would be incredible if we all took a trip together. I would also love to travel with my parents and sisters – my parents have sacrificed so much in life and have worked so incredibly hard to provide me with amazing opportunities – I would love to take them somewhere on my dime for once. Hopefully soon!
7. Are you a backpacker or a flash packer? And what was the best backpack/flashback accommodation where you have ever stayed?
I am definitely a backpacker! I travel on a budget and have never had much
of an ability to travel with a great deal of luxury. One very memorable accommodation for me was when I was playing soccer in Rome, Italy. I lived in a bottom floor apartment of an Italian family’s home about an hour outside of Rome in a very small town called Monterosi. I had to take two buses every morning to get into Rome and I slept on the floor with couch cushions. With that said, it was such an amazing experience. It was so authentic. I got to see incredibly beautiful moments and was far away from any tourist. I ate the most amazing Italian food of my life. I spent time with families and their children. I got to see the real lives of Italians. I wouldn’t of had it any other way. Those are the types of experiences I strive to have when traveling.
I really love this #TOTD with Tommy! I admire his creativity and his ambition but while he is doing these great things he is still so humble. I think it is pretty cool how he talks about his love for his fiance, his family, his close friends and his dog. I am happy I could share a part of his story with you guys and I hope you guys enjoyed it too!
I will talk to you guys later,
